Multiple-stage life
Many of us have been raised on the traditional notion of a three-stage approach to our working lives: education, followed by work, and then retirement. But this well-established pathway is already beginning to collapse; life expectancy is rising, final-salary pensions are vanishing, and increasing numbers of people are juggling multiple careers. Whether you are 18, 45, or 60, you will need to do things very differently from previous generations and learn to structure your life in entirely new ways.
Drawing on the unique pairing of their experience in psychology and economics, Resyfy offers the solution, showing how to rethink your education, your career valuables, and your relationships and create a fulfilling 100-year life.
How can you fashion a career and life path that defines you and your values and creates a shifting balance between work and leisure? What are the most effective ways of boosting your physical and mental health over a longer and more dynamic lifespan? How can you make the most of your intangible assets? such as family and friends ? as you build a productive, longer life?
In a multiple-stage life, how can you learn to make the transitions that will be so crucial and experiment with new ways of living, working, and learning?
Resyfy is designed to expect and considers the choices and options that you will face. It is also fundamentally a call to action for all individuals, firms, and governments and offers the clearest demonstration that a 100-year life can be a wonderful and inspiring one.
Twenty years ago, it was common for people to stick with one company for their entire careers and generally have a ‘linear’ career. e.g., you might start off as an entry-level analyst and slowly move up the ranks linearly.
But if you want a great career, don’t expect a linear, direct climb. Instead, move between companies and industries and more importantly, chase opportunity.
For some, that might mean taking reduced benefits to be able to join a fast-growing startup. While for others, that might mean changing careers entirely and starting from ground zero because you’re passionate about a new field.
Careers aren’t a ladder, they’re a jungle gym. Move sideways, up, down, or off. Jump from branch to branch and take risks. If you want an extraordinary career, don’t expect a boring, straightforward path.
The skills that got you here will not get you there
Put simply, the skills you need to learn will change the more senior you get. Early in your career, technical skills are more important. If you’re a junior programmer, you need to be good at coding — and the better you are at coding, the more often you’d get promoted.
But things change as your career progresses. Even if you become the best coder at the company, you’re not going to be made CEO — you need to be good at other things. Things like people skills, smart prioritization and leadership — these are new kinds of skills that are required to break past glass ceilings and get promoted. Just working on your old skills won’t get you where you want to be.
Transitioning from fleeting “resumes” to career curation
Today, it isn’t easy to amplify your authenticity and show the world who you are with a resume.
The benefits of developing a career portfolio go beyond having a helpful tool to showcase yourself. The process of creating the portfolio is also a valuable way to prepare for networking and interviews.
Through the effort of identifying, writing about, and organizing your experience, education, skills, and accomplishments, you will be prepared to speak easily and confidently about yourself to prospective employers.
